Wax: Opt for pet-safe wax options like soy wax, beeswax, or coconut wax. These waxes burn cleanly and emit minimal toxins, making them ideal for pet-friendly candles.
Wick: Choose cotton or wooden wicks for a safe burn. Avoid wicks containing lead or other harmful metals.
Fragrance: If you'd like scented candles, opt for natural essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances. Essential oils not only smell delightful but also offer potential aromatherapy benefits for both you and your pets.
Coloring (Optional): If you wish to add color to your candles, use natural, non-toxic colorants like mica powder or plant-based dyes.
Container: Select a heat-resistant container for your candles. Mason jars, ceramic vessels, or even repurposed glass containers work well.
Double Boiler or Microwave: You'll need a way to melt the wax safely. A double boiler setup or a microwave can be used for this purpose.
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Pet-Safe Candles with Soy Wax
While there are several options for the type of wax, I have the most experience using soy wax for my homemade candles.
Step 1: Prepare Your Workstation and Jars
Gather all your materials and set up your workstation. Ensure you're working in a well-ventilated area away from drafts. Make sure your jars are clean by wiping out with rubbing alcohol.
Wax: the amount of wax you need is 2x the amount needed to fill the jar
Fragrance: Soy wax can typically only hold a max of 10% fragrance oil. A kitchen scale comes in handy for this part. Weigh the wax to be melted for your candle, then multiply by the amount of fragrance you want to add.
Example:
Wax: 10oz soy wax
10% fragrance load
10oz x .1 = 1oz. of fragrance oil
Step 2: Melt the Wax
Using a double boiler or microwave, melt the soy wax to 185 degrees F. But follow the manufacturer's instructions for the wax you're using.
Step 3: Add Fragrance and Color
Once the wax is melted to temperature, remove from heat and add your chosen pet-safe scents. If desired, add a pinch of natural colorant to achieve your preferred hue. Stir gently to distribute the fragrance and color evenly for 2 minutes.
Step 4: Secure the Wick
Most wicks come with a sticker to stick to bottom of the candle jar, but Dip the wick's metal base into the melted wax and place it at the center of your container. Hold it in place until the wax solidifies, ensuring the wick stays centered.
Step 5: Pour the Wax
When the wax reaches 135 degrees F, carefully pour the melted wax into your container, leaving some space at the top. Allow the wax to cool and solidify.
Step 6: Trim the Wick
Once the wax is completely cool and solid, trim the wick to around half an inch above the wax surface.
Step 7: Enjoy Your DIY Pet-Safe Candle
It is important to let your candle cure before you light it. The recommended curing time for soy candles is 2 weeks. After that your homemade pet-safe candle is ready to light up your space with a cozy glow and a delightful fragrance that won't harm your pets.
